Shahnama [shah-nah-meh] or the Book of Kings was written by a Persian poet, Firdawsi. Regarded as the longest poem ever written by a single poet, Shahnama took more than 30 years to complete (from 997 to 1010 AD). A mixture of Persian history and mythology, it tells us about the epic journey of legendary rulers to the advent of Islam.
Copies of the Shahnama were frequently commissioned by Persian kings and Shahs and were decorated with miniature paintings and illuminated in gold.
Educators are encouraged to share stories of the Shahnama with students and use the colouring sheet provided as an activity.
