LAYERS OF RUST – UNCOVERING THE HIDDEN INSCRIPTION ON THE 19TH CENTURY BARONG
The rapid deterioration of the iron artefact is because of exposure to moisture and oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere, both of which are needed to form rust. If the rust is not stabilised, it will continue to form and “eat” its way through the metal, resulting in the loss of the metal.
