The keris culture in Java and the surrounding islands including Madura, Bali, Lombok and the neighbouring Sunda territories in the western part of Java shows plethora of designs and influences rooted from the ancient kingdoms. The classification based on periodisation (tangguh) shows variations of regional styles with relativity of prominent keris-makers (empu) related to the era.
The ladrang and gayaman styles are two great examples of keris produced in Java and often affiliated to the Javanese royal courts (keraton). Java keris-making heritage continues for many generations, where the living empus inherited the exquisite craftsmanship, philosophy and methodology of their forefathers.
