Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) has successfully organised the, "A Spiritual Journey: Islamic Culture and Heritage in Southeast Asia". This exhibition highlighted the photographs selected from the many that were submitted to the IAMM's first photography competition. This initiative seeks to inspire creativity among photographers as well as to document the visual appeal of Islam in Southeast Asia.

More than 120 photographers have submitted their work. This diverse pool of talent is not only from Malaysia, but also from Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, France, Germany and United Kingdom. They are of different backgrounds, both professional and amateur; all are intent on sharing their views and perceptions of the Islamic elements of Southeast Asia, home to over 230 million Muslims. The fusion of modern and traditional practice has developed into a unique identity, which can only be appreciated by a journey through the peninsula and archipelago.

A Spiritual Journey: Islamic Culture and Heritage in Southeast Asia photography exhibition was held at our Open Space Gallery from 14 July until 14 October 2017. The winners of three Grand Prizes totalling MYR 10,000 have been announced during the opening day. The highlight of the exhibition was the 50 top photographs from the competition that were viewed by visitors from all over the world throughout the exhibition period. It ibecame a platform for photographers to immerse themselves in subject matter that has not been the focus of any photography competition before. Through the eyes of these enthusiasts, the South-east Asian Muslim cultural identity were shared with the public and the world, providing new perspectives and understanding of the region.

A special talk by Shuhada Hasim entitled, Islamic Culture & Heritage from Malaysia Context – Capturing Story was held during the opening of the exhibition.
