In conjunction with the 'Oceans That Speak' exhibition, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia invites you to attend a talk on the fascinating stories of the Philippines within the Nusantara waters. This talk will focus on the movements of the people between the islands of the archipelago, exploring the rich exchange not only of goods, but also of culture, language, beliefs, and ideas. These diverse interactions, which have unfolded over centuries, have shaped the shared history and unique cultural landscape of the region. Join us for this enlightening talk and immerse yourself in the captivating history of the Philippines and its connections to the wider Nusantara region.
The Speaker:
Dr. Felice Noelle Rodriguez
Dr. Felice Noelle Rodriguez is the Director of El Kaban de Zamboanga, Centre for Local History and Culture, at the Universidad de Zamboanga. She holds both a master’s and a doctoral degree in History from the University of the Philippines. Her research covers a range of topics including raiding, warfare, Christian discourses, nationalism, and the history of Zamboanga. She has translated Felix Laureano’s 1895 Recuerdos de Filipinas from Spanish to English and curated exhibits on diverse historical subjects such as La Solidaridad, Philippine postcards, Zamboanga's history, and early Malay nationalism. Dr. Rodriguez continues her research on the Malay world, global trade, warfare, and interconnections. Additionally, for the University of South Eastern Philippines under the BARMM project, she authored the Zamboanga module.
