Thinking, Seeing, and Imagining Mosque Architecture in the 21st Century: The Third Cycle of the Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture (AFAMA) and the Second International Conference on Mosque Architecture (ICMA 2019) at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia.
The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM), in collaboration with Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture (AFAMA), is pleased to be hosting the Second International Conference on Mosque Architecture (ICMA 2019) in November. Themed “Future: Mosque: Architecture: Mosques in the 21st Century and Beyond,” this three-day conference will feature an international line-up of keynote speakers and presenters, scheduled to spark and exchange imaginative ideas and ways on mosque architecture that mirror current realities of society, technology, and the environment. The IAMM partnership with AFAMA is also extended to a concurrent special photography exhibition that showcases the shortlisted mosques, contemporary and historical, of the Third Cycle of the Award (2017–2020). The Award in its selection primarily probes architectural solutions that synthesised aesthetics, cultural sensibility, and sustainability in mosque designs; by this round of their assessment, hundreds of nominees from all over the world have been evaluated down to a semi-final candidacy of twenty-seven mosques. Framed within three key categories — central, juma‘a (Friday, or congregational), and local mosques — the shortlisted mosques shall undergo yet another round of assessment by the esteemed members of the Award’s International Master Jury in November 2019 in Kuala Lumpur. The announcement of the final winners of the Third Cycle of the Award is due in April 2020.
ICMA 2019 will run from 25 to 27 November 2019 at the IAMM Auditorium and Special Gallery 1. F
Photographs and drawings of the shortlisted mosques, from Indonesia to Ghana, will be displayed at IAMM’s Open Space Gallery from 21 November 2019 until 31 January 2020. Find out more about the twenty-seven shortlisted mosques of the Third Cycle of the Award, 2017–2020 by clicking here
