Zakat is one of the obligations in Islam and the most important pillar after shahadah (proclamation of faith) and solat (five daily prayers). Its obligation is written in the Qur’an and the Prophetic Hadith. In Islamic jurisprudence, zakat refers to the portion of wealth that Allah (SWT) has ordered to be distributed among the rightful recipients (asnaf) among the Muslim community as determined by Allah (SWT). Through the obligation of zakat, the intimate bond between rich and poor within a society is fostered. It creates spiritual and material growth for both zakat givers and the asnaf.
The catalogue and exhibition, Az-Zakah: Spirit, Realisation and Obligation recollects the history of zakat in the first century of Islam until today. It seeks to educate the public on the fundamental nature of zakat in Islam and the role of Lembaga Zakat Selangor (MAIS) in streamlining the zakat management as had been practised by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his companions and the consensus of the fiqh scholars. In commemorating the passage of 20 years of its establishment, the exhibition highlights the significant milestone of LZS.
This exhibition provides the insightful understanding on the establishment of zakat in Islam and in Malaysia. It serves as a window for the public to learn about zakat collection and its distribution to the asnaf along with the wisdom behind the fulfillment of zakat obligation. In the same spirit, the exhibition shares the importance of the five development programmes specially designed by LZS for the asnaf.
