In preparation for the Hajj month, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia focuses on this highly significant event in the exhibition ‘En Route to Mecca: Pilgrims’ Voices Throughout the Centuries’. Nothing embodies the universal nature of Islam better than Hajj. Pilgrims converge from every corner of the earth, accompanied by unprecedented media coverage from around the world. The aspect of Hajj that receives less coverage is how the pilgrims reach their goal.
‘En Route to Mecca’ emphasises the sense of anticipation and adventure that the faithful have always encountered on their way to fulfilling this Pillar of Islam. A museum can offer more than beautiful objects to look at. It can also tell a story, and there are few better stories than those of the men and women through the ages who have completed Hajj. En Route to Mecca shows the diversity of the pilgrims and the many ways of reaching their destination, as well as explaining an experience that can never be replicated.
